Argosy University | Tips for increasing reading comprehension for college students

Tips for increasing reading comprehension in college students

So here you are fresh into college, and despite having read a few books in your life thus far, you suddenly find yourself faced with a mountain of knowledge bulging out of text and reference books that you need to read and digest in a pretty short space and time. I have to concede, it seems a pretty daunting task, and quite off-putting if you are not a regular reader or someone who has trained himself to speed-read. Read the full article here.

Is Your Social Profile Keeping You from Getting a Job? | Argosy University

Social media can sometimes do more harm than good. Imagine that you’re looking for a job that allows you to put your psychology degree to work. You print a professional resume and dress well for your interview. You concentrate on meeting your prospective employer’s eyes and answering every question concisely. Everything goes beautifully and by the time you leave, you’re convinced you’ve nailed the job.

Except you don’t get that phone call. Several weeks go by and you realize you’ve been passed over for the job. Why?

Because that prospective boss, the one who just tossed your meticulously written resume into the trash, turned to his computer as soon as you left and searched for your name. Read the full article here.

Understand Your Own Intelligence | Argosy University Blog

Three years ago I listened to a lecture on cognition that changed the way I think about intelligence. This is the crux. There are two types of cognition. The first is normal cognition. This is the ability to retrieve knowledge from memory. When you are asked a question on a test and produce an answer, that’s a display of cognitive ability. The second type of cognition is metacognition; the ability to know whether or not you know. Read the full article here.

Argosy University: The Forgetting Curve

Almost everyone has had an experience with forgetting something, whether it is as simple as where they put their keys or as unnerving as walking into a classroom with no memory that a major test was scheduled. Important or not, forgetting something often causes people to question what is wrong with their memory, though most often there is absolutely nothing amiss. One of the first people to study the process of forgetting was a psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus. Read the full article here.

Argosy University: Sports Psychology in Action

Ask any of the athletes that were successful at this year’s 2010 Vancouver Olympics what helped them bring their A-game and most will have a simple explanation. It’s all about preparing their minds,or in other words, engaging in sports psychology. Many coaches of star players believe in using this tool to help athletes exercise the mind, in addition to their bodies, for the Olympics or other physical endeavors.

Even though German biathlete Magdalena Neuner already had six world championships before coming to the Olympics, she also had a history of inconsistent shooting. That inconsistency led the world champion to sometimes show poor results. She believed the key to improving and returning to her championship form in this year’s Olympics was her mental preparation. Argosy University: College Informational Sessions

Collecting Vital Information Before Entering School

Entering college is an exciting time that requires a significant amount of preparation and planning. The matter of choosing a school demands a healthy amount of research and soul-searching, but several more questions arise once you've made the decision. Attending pre-college information sessions is the ideal way to gather imperative information that will answer lingering questions and help you map out your journey. Information sessions often include discussions on financial aid, admission procedures, and how the respective college will help guide your career choices and education.

Whether you've decided on what school to attend or still need help choosing the perfect school, information sessions will help you make educated choices about continuing your education. The event representatives are there to answer any questions you pose in order to smooth your transition process, so make the effort to prepare questions to ask during the session. If you can't come up with a sufficient list of questions before attending, ask friends, family, or your current teachers for their input. There's a good chance that college alumni have a collection of questions they wish they had asked before school began. If nothing else, the events will be rich with literature on the specific school, allowing you to collect materials that clearly detail how the school can accommodate your needs.

It's exceedingly important to take advantage of your resources before attending college. The more information you collect, the more confident you will be when you first step foot on campus grounds. Confidence will translate well with professors and help you maximize your time at school.

Argosy University hosts Open House events regularly at their 19 campus locations. Keep updated and visit Argosy University Online to view start times at the campus of your choice and RSVP!

Forensic Psychology, a History

http://helpingpsychology.com/forensic-psychology-a-history

Forensic psychologists are often asked to provide testimony, assessments or evaluations in both civic and criminal trials. Although viewed as a relatively recent psychological specialty, forensic psychology was introduced well over a hundred years ago. In 1873 Wilhelm Wundt founded the first psychology laboratory in Leipzig, Germany. It was his work that refined and established the experimental method as it applied to psychology. He conducted experiments in the legal arena in areas such as witness testimony and criminal evaluation that are still being used today.
