Argosy University, Salt Lake City Honored as “Best of State”

(DRAPER, Ut. – 2012)   Argosy University, Salt Lake City is delighted to announce that the campus has been named “Best of State” in the Education category of the annual prestigious state awards. Dr. Kerrie Naylor, Chair of the Department of Education, has been named Best Administrator and the campus as a whole was awarded Best Curriculum Development for the Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor program.

The Best of State Awards were created to recognize outstanding individuals, organizations and businesses in Utah. By recognizing excellence in our community and sharing examples of success and triumph in so many worthy endeavors, we hope all will be inspired to reach a little higher, to try a little harder, and to work a little smarter for our dreams and goals.

The Best of State Judges are looking for individuals, businesses, and organizations that excel in their endeavors, use innovative approaches or methods and contribute to a better quality of life in Utah. Entries were judged based as follows:

·       (50%) Achievement in the field of endeavor.

·       (30%) Innovation or creativity in approaches, techniques, methods, or processes.

·       (20%) Contribution to the quality of life in Utah.

According to the Best of State organization, candidates make Utah a better place. Community service, charitable contributions (financial or goods and services), family-friendly employment policies, environmentally sound practices or policies, increased employment opportunities, community beautification, education, contribution to a strong economy, and cultural contributions are just a few ways people and organizations make Utah a better place to live and work.

Argosy University, Nashville - Get Ready for College Boot Camp

When: July 31, Aug 1, 2, 3 


Time: 1pm to 3pm 


What: Get Ready for College Boot Camp 


Why: This will allow upcoming fall students and other interested students to learn about the process, get them excited about school and to stay focused while being involved with learning before school starts in September. The Boot Camp will be “techniques to manage your time & energy”. I know a lot of our students get overwhelmed when they begin the program and we want to make sure we offer some tips to help them stay focused and organized. We want to help students transition from the attitude and skills of a youth to the attitude and skills of an adult. 


Agenda: Daily activities including program chairs, graduates, outside community coming in to  present. We will host a technology workshop and writing Workshop during the camp. On the last day we will go over steps to getting started and give out certificates for completing the boot camp with a small luncheon at the end.

Reflective Practice of Multi-unicultural School Leaders

(ORANGE, Ca.  – 2012)   Dr. Roberto Cases, Program Chair for the administrative credential and graduate degree program for the five Southern California campuses of Argosy University has co-authored the book, Reflective Practice of Multi-unicultural School Leaders. Released in February of this year with co-author Dr. Paul Rodriguez of Cambridge College, the book was intended to address the authors’ deep-seated concerns for children who have been tagged “at risk” of school failure by the broad standards of the current school system.

Their aim is to improve the process of educating these children with new student-centric leadership and instruction methods that emphasize conscientiousness in the way educators should approach their students.  The authors, through their experience in leadership and instruction with children of different cross-culturally diverse backgrounds or who speak different languages, have made that experience a gauge for developing Reflective Practice of Multi-unicultural School Leaders, a book that may very well define a new standard in the way school systems operate.

Reflective practice involves the capacity to reflect on action so as to engage in a process of continuous learning, understanding, and thus improvement. (This is engagement on the individual leader, educator basis – a fluid way of adjusting and improving leadership methods day by day.) Multi-uniculturalism is the concept that, before understanding and acknowledging other cultures, individuals must first comprehend and embrace their own beliefs, values, traditions and physical environment. The authors, issuing a call for change in the American school system, advocate reflective practice as the best method to train multi-unicultural school leaders in the leadership and instruction of a cross-culturally diverse student body.

This book is a clarion call for educators throughout the United States.  The demographic trends indicate the need for updating, if not overhauling, the standards and methods with which America educates its young.  Sooner or later, the cases of students “at risk” of school failure will become a significant portion of the statistics as the educational system does not adjust to children’s cross-culturally diverse backgrounds and languages.  Before this happens, the authors have sounded the call for change as soon as humanly possible.

Dr. Casas has served as an adjunct professor in graduate and undergraduate courses in Education and Educational leadership for Cambridge College, Chapman University, Ontario, Concordia University, Irvine and California State University, Los Angeles.  Dr. Casas retired from public education in 2008 after serving more than 36 years.  He served as Deputy Superintendent for Lynwood Unified School District and as District Superintendent for Brawley Union High School District, in California.

Argosy University, Salt Lake City Campus President Appointed to Board of Utah Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit

(DRAPER, Ut. – 2012)   Argosy University, Salt Lake City Campus President David Tietjen has been appointed to the board of the Somos Foundation, the 501 (c)(3) non-profit arm of the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Tietjen will serve as a member of the organization’s Education Committee.

The mission of the Somos Foundation is to provide financial support through scholarships for post-secondary education, mentoring workshops, and networking resources to Utah Latino students and adults who have demonstrated a strong commitment to education and our community. In turn, the students will contribute to the economic development and well-being of all communities in Utah. The Utah Hispanic Business Leadership Foundation, d.b.a. Somos Foundation, is  a501 (c) (3) non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors selected from local business, education and community leaders. The Somos Foundation is in partnership with the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in this endeavor.

“I am honored to serve as a member of the board of the SOMOS Foundation and look forward to helping the organization as it continues to provide the resources that Latino students and adults need to become leaders in our community,” says Tietjen.

The long range goal of the Somos Foundation is to develop and sustain a cadre of skilled, educated and diverse business leaders to assist in the future social and economic development of the Utah Latino community.

Wounded Warrior Holiday Drive

American Soldier Network, Argosy University, Orange County and MicroSoft Bring Treats to the Troops with Wounded Warrior Holiday Drive

Orange, Calif., December 10 – Argosy University, Orange County is teaming up with the American Solider Network and MicroSoft to bring holiday cheer to wounded troops this year with the American Soldier Network’s Fourth Annual Holiday Project. The organizations will be partnering to stuff more than 500 red, white and blue coolers for wounded soldiers and troops throughout California.

Stuffing of the packs for soldiers will take place Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at the Microsoft store in the Shops at Mission Viejo, from 1 pm – 4 pm. Volunteers from the partner organizations will be filling coolers with items donated from a number of companies. Coolers will be delivered to military patients at Balboa Naval Hospital beginning December 17, 2010.

Items for the coolers have been donated by SnapOn Tools, Valic Insurance Corporation, Red Rock Resort and Casino, Uptone Pictures, Calvin Klein, Arbonne and a host of private and individual donors. To donate additional items for the holiday packs or to help provide financial assistance to the American Soldier Network, visit http://www.americansoldiernetwork.org/.
